County Supervisor (District 2) Gayle B. Uilkema
Supervisor Uilkema, who is currently serving her second term as Chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, has a long history of public service. She was elected to five terms as a Lafayette City Council Member and served four terms as Mayor of Lafayette. Gayle was elected to the Board of Supervisors in November, 1996 and was sworn in for her third term as a County Supervisor in January, 2005. Gayle represents District 2, a diverse district of 17 communities, including the seven incorporated cities of Hercules, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pinole and portions of Walnut Creek, as well as the communities of Briones Valley, Canyon, Crockett, Pacheco, Port Costa, Rodeo, Saranap, Tara Hills.
Gayle represents Contra Costa County on many state, regional and local agencies such as:
- Contra Costa County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO)
- Central Contra Costa Transit Authority
- Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Vice-Chair
- Internal Operations Committee of Board of Supervisors, Chair
- Eight years as Director of California Supervisors Association
Gayle is a professor in the field of Public Administration and has taught in graduate school at JFK University, California State University-Hayward, and was a course development consultant in Emergency Planning at UC Berkeley. She is the mother of two grown daughters. One is a Deputy District Attorney and the other is a physician in Irvine, California and a member of the medical school faculty at UC Irvine.
Supervisor Uilkema has received many awards for her public service including awards from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the American Association of University of Women. Gayle was named Alumna of the Year by California State University-Hayward and was honored as the co-recipient of the West County Citizen of the Year by the West County Business & Professional Association.
