Power of the Pen, Issue 12
"[Jane Roberts' work (wife of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts)]"ought to be out of bounds." (Ted Kennedy, last Friday)
Nice to agree with Senator Kennedy on something. Of course, his opinion didn't stop the Times from doing an article: http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/12211499.htm
Reform out Lawsuits in?
Looks like redistricting may be off the ballot, as we've all heard that minor drafting issues have caused a judge to agree with Democratic AG Lockyer's lawsuit and order the initiative off the ballot. (This is appealable see July 22 column at this link: http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/insider/ However, getting back on the ballot is problematic.)
There have been several articles (links below) describing Arnold's challenges and low opinion poll numbers (although he still above the legislature.) People are saying he should back off the special election. A supporter counseled canceling the election and declaring for re-election simultaneously.
However, politics as usual has not worked in California. With politics as usual, we'd still have a high car tax, short funding of transportation, billions more in deficits, and Gray Davis. Politics as usual, with non competitive districts, will keep our state, a world class economy, with second class government.
Arnold needs to go on the offensive with the budget initiative. Between 1980 and 2000, the state and local expenditures doubled in real terms. Then Gray Davis and the legislature spent the dot com bubble money as if it was going to continue. Arnold should use this issue to restart reform, and get momentum. Please encourage this in your letters to the newspapers, particularly as plans emerge this week.
